Local authorities have a duty to support homeless and badly housed people.

This one-day course will provide an introduction to homelessness law and will explore the duties local authorities have to homeless and badly housed people, both in theory and in practice.

The course will examine Homelessness, eligibility and priority need, intentional homelessness and local connection. It will also consider the impact of the Homeless Reduction Act on the duties of local authorities and will outline review and appeal rights following a negative homelessness decision.

This course will support you to: 

• Identify circumstances that trigger a council’s duty to start a homelessness investigation
• Describe key issues concerning homelessness, eligibility for assistance, priority need, intentional homelessness, and local connection
• Advise on the duties of a local authority towards a homeless person
• Advise on review and appeal rights following a negative homelessness decision

Suitable for new and less experienced advisors and support workers who require a grounding in the key legislation and provisions surrounding homelessness.
