Domestic abuse is everywhere, and people with multiple and complex needs or additional vulnerabilities are often at greater risk.
Supporting people who are experiencing abuse, or living with its long-term effects, requires a deep understanding of both the specific dynamics and the universal patterns of abuse and how it can affect a person’s ability to cope with a wide range of situations and relationships.
By exploring the pervasiveness and complexities of domestic abuse, this course will support you to recognise where and how you can support survivors on their road to recovery, which can be long and winding.
This course is delivered by our partners RISE, with 30+ years of experience supporting survivors in Brighton and Hove in a wide range of contexts.
The course will support you to:
- Increase your understanding of domestic abuse, its prevalence and the reasons for this
- Understand who DA affects, typical patterns and variations in different contexts and communities
- Develop your awareness and compassion for the victim experience
- Identify how the impact of domestic abuse may manifest in your client groups
- Increase your awareness of perpetrator behaviours, and models for understanding and identifying risk and potential escalation
- Improve your confidence in how to address DA issues with clients
- Reflect on your learning and how this can be applied in your role
Please be aware that due to the sensitive nature of the topic there may be triggering or challenging conversations during the training. Please be mindful of your needs before and during the course to ensure that your wellbeing is a priority. You will not be asked or required to discuss personal experiences and we invite everyone to consider their workload/personal commitments following the course to allow time to transition back into practice appropriately.
