The effects of trauma, neglect and past-experiences can be evidenced in a wide range of destructive and challenging behaviours. Developing your knowledge and understanding of trauma is the first step in being able to support your clients in a safer and more psychologically-informed way.

BHT’s one day foundation course will introduce you to the key concepts and principles of trauma (Type l), complex trauma (Type ll) and trauma-informed care. Through experiential learning the course will explore the physiological and psychological effects of trauma on a person’s behaviour, their social wellbeing and their ability to form healthy attachments and relationships.

You will be encouraged to share your work experiences and reflect on the potential challenges of working with trauma and how your own client relationships may be affected.

Ensures you are able to:
  • recognise the common causes, symptoms and effects of trauma and complex trauma
  • be aware of the differences between trauma (type I) & complex trauma (type II)
  • understand the basic physiology of the brain and its role in trauma
  • understand the impact of trauma on emotional, psychological and social wellbeing – attachment and forming healthy relationships
  • understand the aims of trauma-informed practice and the importance of working safely
  • offer basic practical support to clients and be able to offer four safety and stabilisation techniques
  • understand your own legal responsibilities, the boundaries of confidentiality and duty of care
  • recognise the signs and symptoms of secondary trauma and look after your own emotional wellbeing
Who should attend?

This is an introductory level course which will focus on developing your ‘knowledge and understanding’.  Suitable for all staff supporting vulnerable adults and working with complex needs.

Please note that we also run a Level 2 course which will look at the more practical approaches and strategies.

Level:  Introductory
