Many vulnerable and homeless adults will have experienced trauma, neglect and abuse at some point in their lives. Building relationships and trust with people with complex needs is essential to working successfully with them.

This one day intermediate course follows on from BHT’s ‘Trauma and Complex PTSD – Level 1’ and will aim to build on your theoretical knowledge and understanding of complex trauma (Type II). The course will also begin to explore how you can apply practical skills, approaches and techniques in the workplace to be able to support your clients in a more psychologically informed way.

Through experiential learning you will explore how to assess a person’s holistic functioning and their window of tolerance and will look at a range of interventions to ensure safe trauma-informed practices that avoid re-traumatisation, build resilience and support recovery.

You will be encouraged to share and reflect on your work experiences of complex trauma and consider methods of addressing challenges.

Ensures you are able to:
  • build on your knowledge of the effects of Complex trauma (Type II)
  • recognise the differing attachment styles relating to early childhood trauma
  • identify mental health problems related to people with complex trauma
  • understand how best to support people with multiple needs (PD, substance/alcohol misuse/anxiety etc.) and offer practical support
  • reflect on the key challenges and priorities when working with complex trauma
  • consider the holistic effects of complex trauma
  • offer practical support and techniques to regulate emotions
  • understand own legal responsibilities, the boundaries of confidentiality and duty of care
  • self-reflect on own practices and safety measures
